🚫 The Expired Food Myth

“Best by” doesn’t always mean bad - but let’s not play roulette either. Here's the truth:

  • Canned foods: If the can is bulging, dented at the seams, or rusting? Toss it. No questions asked.
  • Dry goods: Flour, oats, and rice don’t last forever. They go rancid or attract bugs.
  • Homemade preserves: If you water-bath canned something low-acid like veggies or tomatoes without pressure-canning it? Botulism is a real, invisible, deadly risk. No smell. No taste. Just danger.  

You can’t “see” botulism spores. If it grew in that jar, you’ll only know once it's too late.


🐛 Pantry Pests: You’re Not Just Sharing With the Fam

  • Flour gets weevils.
  • Rice attracts rice moths and larvae.
  • Old oats or grains? Bug hotels.
    Store them in airtight containers, not that torn paper bag from the store. Pro tip: pop new dry goods in the freezer for 3 days to kill off any tiny unwanted stowaways.

🤢 Mold Isn’t Crunchy Chic

Mold on cheese, bread, or fruit?

  • If it's soft or moist (like berries, jam, or bread) and has mold, toss the whole thing. Mold roots spread far.
  • Hard cheese or firm veggies (like carrots)? They say to cut off at least 1 inch around the mold. I say throw it out!
    Don't sniff it. Don’t taste it. And please don’t scrape off the top and pretend you’re fine. You're not a raccoon.

  • Keep dry goods in jars, not bags.
  • Label everything with dates, especially homemade stuff.
  • Rotate your pantry. Old in front, new in back.

  • Clean out the fridge weekly. Funky science projects go bye.
  • Trust your gut… and not the expired yogurt from 2022.
